Foot and ankle pain can arise from injuries, changes in foot structure or conditions affecting the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues. Symptoms may develop suddenly following an injury or gradually due to repetitive strain, altered foot mechanics, degenerative changes or an underlying musculoskeletal condition.
The location and nature of the pain can provide useful clues about its cause. Some people may experience pain primarily when walking or exercising, while others may notice swelling, stiffness, weakness or instability. Because different conditions can produce similar symptoms, persistent or worsening pain may require medical assessment to establish the underlying cause.
Foot and ankle conditions can affect the joints, ligaments, tendons, nails and foot alignment. Dr Yung assesses and treats a range of conditions based on their symptoms, severity and effect on function.
A bunion is a change in the alignment of the big toe that can cause a prominent bump, discomfort and difficulty with footwear.
Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls excessively inwards and may be associated with a reduced or absent arch, discomfort and foot fatigue.
Heel pain can arise from the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon or surrounding tissues and may affect walking or activity.
An ankle sprain occurs when the supporting ligaments are overstretched or torn, causing pain, swelling and sometimes instability.
An ingrowing toenail develops when the nail edge grows into or irritates the surrounding skin, causing pain, inflammation or infection.
Hammer and claw toes cause smaller toes to bend abnormally, which can lead to discomfort, pressure points and footwear difficulties.
Foot and ankle problems can affect your mobility and everyday activities, particularly when pain, swelling or instability persists. A specialist assessment can help identify the underlying cause and determine whether treatment is needed.
Consider seeing a foot and ankle specialist if you experience:

The feet and ankles bear weight and are repeatedly used during walking, running and other activities. Injuries can result from sudden twisting movements, falls, repetitive strain or increased physical activity, particularly when the joints, ligaments or tendons are placed under excessive stress.
